A Toast To Six Seasons of Gossip Girl: A Fan’s Retrospective Look at The Series

Gossip Girl cast photoIt’s a sad, sad day on the Upper East Side—or in my case, at the Alloy Entertainment offices in Chelsea. Because tonight is the series finale of Gossip Girl; the night we say goodbye to Nate Archibald, to Dan and Serena, to our favorite evil genius Georgina, and of course, to Chuck and Blair.

I can’t believe it’s been five years since Gossip Girl began. It seems like just yesterday that I was watching the pilot with my college roommates, huddled around our tiny dorm room TV—but even then, in those first few minutes, as we watched Serena arrive at Grand Central in a swirl of gossip and Nate and Blair’s awkward kiss (I know, I forget that they dated too!)—even then we knew something was happening that was bigger than all of us. It was Gossip Girl, and it defined our generation.

I’ve had so many wonderful Gossip Girl moments over the years. Interviewing Chace Crawford the summer that I worked at CNN (we both grew up waterskiing on Lake Travis in Texas!), running into Ed Westwick at a performance of Macbeth in New York (we talked for several minutes about our love of Shakespeare, both of us pretending that I didn’t know who he was), accidentally walking through a shot when they were filming in Lincoln Center, when Serena sits alone and sad at the fountain. Curling up with my younger sister and watching all of Season 1 in a single weekend, and turning her into a fellow Gossip Girl addict. I even convinced my Princeton English professor to teach Gossip Girl in our American Bestsellers class, then wrote a final paper about the Blair-Nate-Serena love triangle. Then, finally, I landed my job here at Alloy Entertainment, and it all made sense.

A few weeks ago, I even got to live every fan’s wildest dream: attending the Gossip Girl series wrap party at the Palace hotel. It was a night full of twinkling lights, beautiful dresses, sparkling champagne, and a sad sense of goodbye. Best of all? I chatted with Ed and Chace again, and both of them were nice enough to pretend that they remembered me. I even got three—not one, not two, but three—hugs from Chace. (Check out my pics below!)

Because tonight is more than the finale of a TV show. With the end of Gossip Girl comes the end of our formative years and young adulthood. This is the show that taught us to wear headbands and sequins, to always have our friends’ backs, and not to marry princes no matter how dreamy their accents. This is the show that made us fall in love with New York City (and Chuck and Blair). Without Gossip Girl, I’m not sure I would have found my way here, to what I believe is the best job in the world. And for that, I will always be grateful. (Yes, I admit that I cried a little as I wrote this post. I’m sure I’ll cry again tonight, as will many of you.)

So gather your friends, put on your plaid skirts and get ready to watch the most emotional two hours of TV tonight. I know I will.

    You know you love me,
