American is an actress so versatile that she went from playing a popular, athletic teen aching for some quality time with her father in The Sister of the Traveling Pants, to playing a geeky yet endearing recent college grad trying to make it in the cutthroat magazine industry. Her humorous yet poignant portrayal of Betty Suarez, an atypical executive assistant trying to rise above politics and scandals at Mode Magazine, earned her the 59th Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
